    Bonded NdFeB magnets


    Bonded Neodymium magnets are made of strong Nd-Fe-B material mixed into an epoxy binder. The mixture is approximately 97 vol% magnet material and 3 vol% epoxy resin. The manufacturing process involves mixing Nd-Fe-B powder with an epoxy binder, then compressing the mixture in a press and curing the part in an oven. Because the material is formed by crimping, dimensions typically vary by 0.002 inches or better for a given run.


    Bonded Neodymium Iron Boron (NdFeB) magnets are strong magnets for a variety of applications. Epoxy coating is mostly used to bond NdFeB magnets; electroless nickel plating is also used to prevent corrosion. Isotropically bonded NdFeB materials can be magnetized in any direction or multi-pole.


    The bonded Nd-Fe-B material is isotropic and thus can be magnetized in any direction, including multipolar arrangements. Since the material has an epoxy adhesive, it can be machined on a milling machine or lathe. However, the material does not support threads and therefore cannot be tapped. Bonded Nd-Fe-B materials are often used to drastically reduce the size of designs using ceramic magnet materials. Since the material is about three times stronger than ceramic magnet materials, it can be significantly reduced in size. Furthermore, since the material is isotropic, it can be magnetized with multiple poles, such as an N-S-N-S pattern on the outer diameter of the ring.

    Maximum operating temperature


    Although the Curie temperature of NdFeB materials is around 310 ºC for 0% cobalt and higher than 370 ºC for 5% cobalt, some irreversible output loss may occur even at moderate temperatures. The new magnets also have a moderately high reversible temperature coefficient of induction, with the total magnetic output decreasing with increasing temperature. The choice of neodymium magnets over SmCo is a function of the maximum temperature of the application, the desired magnetic output at typical operating temperatures, and the total system cost.


    The new magnet also has some limitations due to its corrosive behavior. In wet environments, a protective coating or electroplating is strongly recommended. Coatings that have been successfully applied include: electronic coatings, powder coatings, nickel plating, zinc plating, parylene, and combinations of these coatings.
